Iomega Personal Cloud offers functionality that makes it easy to securely copy and transfer large or confidential files. Security: Iomega Personal Cloud allows you to choose who has access to what data by invitation only. And, users can choose from three levels of security when sending data over a public network. Cloud storage offers built in redundancy at every level: hard drive, server, and datacenter. Low Maintenance: Once the system is set up there is almost no maintenance. You still have to manage user accounts, but jobs like array maintenance and monitoring the health of your data storage simply go away.

Pros: I like the pysical design and material. It has good software features when it works. Linux based and allows SSH access to CLI. Cons: Hard drives run continuosly even when I am not accessing it. Runs very hot, and the fan doesn't seem to help if it runs at all.

(Currently 56 C and fan at 0 RPM) Sometimes does not respond when trying to access data. I've changed the hard drives and still have the same issues.

Other Thoughts: I bought one of these refurbished from iomega and it lasted about a year. Then one day the web interface showed that one of my drives was new and I couldn't access any data stored on it.

I have since purchased new hard drives and installed and configured them. It worked great until I put about 500 GB of data on it, now it slow to respond if at all, and still runs continuosly. The hard drives are always in there beating away. I have no idea what it is doing and the web interface does not show any indication. Thumbnails process seems to eat up 10 - 30% of the CPU at any given moment. I'm looking for an alternative to iomega and Seagate.

Pros: works as advertised. Has a bunch of features, nice control panel, fairly easy setup. Cons: it gave fan errors after only a week (through the nice email feature). I should have returned it but, I upgraded the firmware as per t/s and waited until it happened again.another 25 days. Iomega replaced it asap (I am a reseller and the unit is a major backup) for 50$.

I should have returned it the first time it errored out. Other Thoughts: If I buy an HP desktop and the hard drive goes bad under warranty, I get a drive shipped to me overnight with a return tag enclosed (free).

I just got the same service from Iomega for fifty bucks. I talked to two different techs that didn't know when the fans were supposed to turn on. That is NOT good support. Hello, mikey did it - First, thank you for providing your feedback.

We really do appreciate it. The fan errors you report were, in all likelihood, unrelated.

Tech Support requested that you update the device firmware because we had a minor reporting bug - the fan was working correctly, but the OS reported an incorrect error state. That issue was resolved in the update. It sounds like the fan really did fail in the second time - fans are actually pretty reliable and we rarely see issues. I am disappointed to hear that our tech support team didn't know or communicate to you that ix2-200 fan does not spin up until the internal temperature of the device reaches 59 C. We've found that this setting provides the best balance of protecting the internal drive and reducing noise. I will follow up with the agents and be sure that mistake doesn't occur again. Thank you again for your feedback!

Pros: The network drive concept is good, and, with the exception of Time Machine backups, it works well. It has many features that may be of interest (cloud server, talks to Facebook, Media server, etc.) - I could care less about them but for others they may be of interest. Cons: Time Machine does NOT work. The NAS is a Linux box, so the drive is formatted as such. Apple does not recognize any disk format other than Apple's. So Iomega creates a virtual drive on top of the Linux drive, that is an image of an Apple formatted drive. Time Machine writes to that.

Each time, Time Machine worked flawlessly for a few days to no more than two weeks, until it hits a verification error. To protect me, Apple locks the backup making all files completely unusable, and insists that I delete the entire backup and start all over again. Once I do, go back to line one of my Cons. I have been working hard with Iomega for months to find a fix, have started and failed about one backup a week per machine (I have two iMacs, with a solid 1 Gbps network, high end cabling and switching). As this is the ONLY reason that I bought this drive, I give it a low rating. Other Thoughts: If Iomega fixes this problem, would rate this derive four stars. The missing star would be due to regular time-outs and access delays.

Iomega

I believe, but am not sure, that the delay is due to a too-slow controller (computer) on board the ix-200. Iomega was not willing to tell what their expected transfer rate is to this device. But my testing, and reading in between Iomega comments, tell me that the highest expected transfer rate is about 200 Mbps, maybe as high as 220 Mbps. It is NOT network limited, it is device limited. So, if you have typical home networking and use, this drive is plenty fast enough; if you need high volume or high speed access, you will need to spend a lot more money. Pros: Lots of features for a low cost.

Cons: iSCSI is slow. We had an OpenNAS built out of a Dell Precision 370 set up for iSCSI that was connected to a server running a scheduled ntbackup of about 70GB. It worked great, but was bulky. We purhased the ix2-200 to replace it, also using iSCSI. Connected identically to the server as the OpenNAS device was, the backup would get 'delayed write failures' at every backup, and we had to revert to the OpenNAS to get good backups. Other Thoughts: I would prefer the LDAP integration be via pass-through rather that by sychronizing accounts, but it's a small nitpick and seems to work fine once set up, so I don't feel justified in listing it as a 'con'. Device seems like it would work great as a NAS if performance is not an issue.
