Wintermaul, Sheep Tag, Battleships, Element TD, and Footman Frenzy were some of our favorites. After Lisk open-sourced it, dozens of new variants popped up, including StarCraft II’s Squadron TD and Dota 2’s Legion TD: Reborn.

Then I moved on to Age of Empires and eventually Warcraft III. I think I got into modding because I always would ask, 'Why not?' 2) Some advice for getting into modding would be. Start simple. Everything in modding/game dev is always more complicated than you think it is.
Start with a game that has an existing mod community. Ask tons of questions.
As you spend more time on a mod, it'll become 'your own' - don't worry too much about being unique. It'll just happen! After League of Legends and Dota 2 became mainstream, players asked us, 'Why not Legion TD 2?' Off the top of my head, some things that inspired me:. Legion TD is still played competitively on Wc3, 7 years after release, and 5 years after its last update. Players translated the game into 7 or 8 different languages and it's very popular internationally.
It's pretty much the only TD that is played competitively (as in, organized tournaments for money). It's different enough from other competitive games like League of Legends, Dota 2, CoD, Halo, CS: GO, in that you don't need reflexes/mechanics, but instead you rely on strategy. It's different from Hearthstone and Chess, because it is team-based and has real-time action. I've learned enough through college and personal projects that I felt that with a small team, we could pull it off. If I ever wanted to take a huge personal risk and dedicate years of my life making Legion TD 2, this would be the time.
Not when I'm married and have kids, etc. It is - that's why we have partnered up with both industry people and community members. For example, our soundtrack is done by Mikolaj 'DarkMXQ' Wisniewski, who we met on the forums.
The 'our partners' section of the Kickstarter probably answers it better than I can here. Having said that, yes - I've worn many hats. It's tiring, but it also gives insane agility. The fact that I can design, code, make VFX, do graphics design & web design, and do a bunch of other things cuts out a lot of overhead. Great question. I think traditional TDs are like a puzzle - you solve them once and then, that's it, you beat the game. That's fine for a mod, but it's a tough sell for a standalone game, especially one that you have to pay for.
Here are some things that separate Legion TD 2 from the rest: it's competitive, it's free-to-play/not pay-to-win, and it's multiplayer. What makes Legion TD 2 competitive?. Legion TD 2 can be 'solved' in the same way chess can be 'solved.' It's possible but impractical.
With 4 players randomizing fighters, there are a lot of combinations, which makes it difficult to discover the perfectly optimal strategy. Throw in the fact that you are playing with 7 other players who are human and make mistakes, it's unlikely you'd have the exact same game twice. Legion TD 2 will readily receive content additions and balance updates. Even assuming the game can be practically solved (which I don't think it can), the solution will change every time the game is patched.
This also shakes things up if the meta begins to converge on some local optimum, which is already unlikely to be the global optimum. At it's core, Legion TD 2 resembles poker.
I make this comparison because of the predictive element of Legion TD 2: predicting what fighters the enemy team is deploying, when they are sending, when they are value-ing vs. Lumbering, what armor/attack types they are weak against, etc.
Poker is a solved game and can be played perfectly by a computer, but the 'perfect' move is the one that maximizes your expected outcome, not necessarily the one that achieves the best outcome. Poker is fun, replayable, and competitive, despite being a solved game. Similarly, assuming you were a computer that played Legion TD 2 perfectly, you would still leak some rounds and lose some games against a highly skilled and/or very lucky opponent. Historically, Legion TD has been played competitively, which lends credence to the notion that Legion TD 2 would be a competitive game - or at least to the notion that it is fun and replayable regardless of its competitiveness. It's not absolutely set in stone, but:. New legions on a regular basis.
It'll definitely be front-loaded. We'll want to get up to about 8 legions or so as fast as possible for a healthy competitive scene. After that, we can take more time with each new release and really push the possibilities of the new engine. We're focusing heavily on supporting player-created content for things like skins, cosmetic items, etc. Like Dota 2's workshop. So those would naturally be 'as things arise' given it's driven by other people.

Of course, at the start, a lot of it will come from us. This is a super early pre-alpha build, too. It's going to look even better in beta, and even better on launch! It'll be similar to how Dota 2 works. Cosmetic items for purchase, created mostly by players.
We're tentatively planning to support custom fighter equips, lane skins, builder models, and visual effects. We’re modders – we love this stuff. Below is a tentative outline of how unlocking legions (races) will work. Numbers are subject to change. Each week, a different legion will be freely available. The rotation varies by account.
Win 10 matches with a legion, and you'll unlock it permanently. Or, you can pay $10. Analysis. For beginners unfamiliar with the game, having all legions available at the start would be overwhelming.
Unlocking legions gradually encourages players to learn legions one at a time before moving onto others. This is the natural way to learn the game. For experienced players, the advantage is still a statistically minor one given that different legions will be carefully balanced. Furthermore, experienced players should be able to easily rack up 10 wins. In small doses, having content that needs to be unlocked or purchased makes for a healthier community. It discourages people from making smurfs and troll accounts because making alternate accounts means they'll have to unlock everything again. Unlocking things just feels good.
Many League of Legends players, after they hit level 30, enjoy the game less because they no longer gain experience to unlock new things. Finally, on a personal note, I ask for your trust as the creator of Legion TD, a lifelong gamer, and someone who has worked day and night on this for the past 2 years without being paid a dime, that we've got the game's best interests in mind.
