After League of Legends and Dota 2 became mainstream, players asked us, 'Why not Legion TD 2?' Off the top of my head, some things that inspired me:. Legion TD is still played competitively on Wc3, 7 years after release, and 5 years after its last update. Players translated the game into 7 or 8 different languages and it's very popular internationally.

It's pretty much the only TD that is played competitively (as in, organized tournaments for money). It's different enough from other competitive games like League of Legends, Dota 2, CoD, Halo, CS: GO, in that you don't need reflexes/mechanics, but instead you rely on strategy. It's different from Hearthstone and Chess, because it is team-based and has real-time action. I've learned enough through college and personal projects that I felt that with a small team, we could pull it off. If I ever wanted to take a huge personal risk and dedicate years of my life making Legion TD 2, this would be the time.

The fact that I can design, code, make VFX, do graphics design & web design, and do a bunch of other things cuts out a lot of overhead. Great question. I think traditional TDs are like a puzzle - you solve them once and then, that's it, you beat the game. That's fine for a mod, but it's a tough sell for a standalone game, especially one that you have to pay for.

Here are some things that separate Legion TD 2 from the rest: it's competitive, it's free-to-play/not pay-to-win, and it's multiplayer. What makes Legion TD 2 competitive?. Legion TD 2 can be 'solved' in the same way chess can be 'solved.' It's possible but impractical.

With 4 players randomizing fighters, there are a lot of combinations, which makes it difficult to discover the perfectly optimal strategy. Throw in the fact that you are playing with 7 other players who are human and make mistakes, it's unlikely you'd have the exact same game twice. Legion TD 2 will readily receive content additions and balance updates. Even assuming the game can be practically solved (which I don't think it can), the solution will change every time the game is patched.

This also shakes things up if the meta begins to converge on some local optimum, which is already unlikely to be the global optimum. At it's core, Legion TD 2 resembles poker.

I make this comparison because of the predictive element of Legion TD 2: predicting what fighters the enemy team is deploying, when they are sending, when they are value-ing vs. Lumbering, what armor/attack types they are weak against, etc.

Poker is a solved game and can be played perfectly by a computer, but the 'perfect' move is the one that maximizes your expected outcome, not necessarily the one that achieves the best outcome. Poker is fun, replayable, and competitive, despite being a solved game. Similarly, assuming you were a computer that played Legion TD 2 perfectly, you would still leak some rounds and lose some games against a highly skilled and/or very lucky opponent. Historically, Legion TD has been played competitively, which lends credence to the notion that Legion TD 2 would be a competitive game - or at least to the notion that it is fun and replayable regardless of its competitiveness. It's not absolutely set in stone, but:. New legions on a regular basis.

It'll definitely be front-loaded. We'll want to get up to about 8 legions or so as fast as possible for a healthy competitive scene. After that, we can take more time with each new release and really push the possibilities of the new engine. Unlocking legions gradually encourages players to learn legions one at a time before moving onto others. This is the natural way to learn the game. For experienced players, the advantage is still a statistically minor one given that different legions will be carefully balanced. Furthermore, experienced players should be able to easily rack up 10 wins. In small doses, having content that needs to be unlocked or purchased makes for a healthier community. It discourages people from making smurfs and troll accounts because making alternate accounts means they'll have to unlock everything again. Unlocking things just feels good.

Many League of Legends players, after they hit level 30, enjoy the game less because they no longer gain experience to unlock new things.
